European Essay Prize awards lifetime achievement to writer Arundhati Roy

Writer Arundhati Roy has been awarded the 45th European Essay Prize for lifetime achievement, the Charles Veillon Foundation has announced.

Roy has been awarded the prize for the French translation of her compilation of essays titled 'Azadi' (2021).

"The jury of the Prix Europeen de l'Essai wishes to highlight an enriching work in terms of reflection on the construction of the world and the relationship with language. Arundhati Roy uses the essay as a form of combat, analysing fascism and the way it is being structured. This is an issue that is increasingly occupying our lives. Her essays offer shelter to a multitude of people," the Foundation said in a statement. The jury also acknowledged Roy's "commitment to political action".

In 'Azadi', Roy has reflected on the meaning of freedom in a world of "growing authoritarianism". The essays include meditations on language, public as well as private, and on the role of fiction and alternative imaginations in current times.

The Delhi-based author's works, including Booker Prize winning 'The God of Small Things', 'The Ministry of Utmost Happiness', and 'My Seditious Heart' have garnered her national and international acclaim.

Roy will receive the award, along with the prize money of CHF 20,000 (approx Rs 18 lakh), at a ceremony on September 12 in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

Since its inception in 1975, the award by the Charles Veillon Foundation has honoured a book or the work of an author "who, through their writings, contributes to nourishing and spreading the evolution of thought".

"It draws attention to authors whose work bear witness to and offer a fertile commentary on current societies, their practices, and ideologies," the foundation said.

Earlier, authors including Alexandre Zinoviev, Edgar Morin, Tzvetan Todorov, Amin Maalouf, Siri Hustvedt, Alessandro Baricco, Jean Starobinski, Iso Camartin, and Peter von Matt have been awarded the European Essay Prize.

Indonesia Open: Srikanth, Prannoy Enter Quarters, Sindhu Exits

Source: PTI

Kidambi Srikanth and H.S. Prannoy registered straight game wins to advance to the men's singles quarterfinals, but it was curtains for double Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu at the Indonesia Open World Tour Super 1000 event here on Thursday.

Taking the court first, Srikanth used his vast experience to quell the challenge of Lakshya Sen 21-17 22-20 in an all-Indian second-round duel.

It was a hard-fought battle between the two Indians but Srikanth bagged the crucial moments with his calmness and experience to prevail over Lakshya in the match that lasted 45 minutes.

The win ensured Srikanth's dominance over his younger countrymate as he took his head-to-head record to 3-0 over Lakshya.

Seventh seed Prannoy then took just 43 minutes to get the better of Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong 21-18 21-16. However, world number 14 Sindhu made an early exit once again, losing 21-18 21-16 to her nemesis and world No 3 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in a women's singles second round match.

Sindhu had made opening round exits from the last two events.

Tai Tzu, seeded third, has been the opponent Sindhu had struggled against the most in the international arena and it was no better here with the Chinese Taipei shuttler enhancing her head-to-head record over the Indian to a staggering 19-5.

Sindhu and Tai Tzu's most recent meeting was at the 2023 Sudirman Cup, where the Chinese Taipei player won 21-14 18-21 21-17.

With Sindhu's loss, the Indian challenge came to an end in the women's singles event.

Earlier in the day, contrary to the final result it was Lakshya who started on a positive note, taking an early 4-0 lead in the opening game before Srikanth clawed his way back.

It was even Stevens till 17 points before Srikanth came out attacking and used the court to great effect to tire out his younger rival and win four straight points to pocket the first game.

The second game was no different as both shuttlers matched each other till 13 points before Srikanth won six straight points to surge ahead to 20-14.

But the 2021 world championships silver medallist squandered six match points as Lakshya bounced back in style to draw level at 20 apiece. Srikanth, however, had the last laugh as he kept his composure to win the next two points and seal the affair.

Srikanth will next play Li Shi Feng of China, who upset fourth seed Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 21-19 21-14 in another second round match, while Prannoy will face third seed Kodai Naraoka of Japan in the last eight round.

Fire Breaks Out At Kolkata Airport, Passengers Panic

Source: PTI

A fire broke out near a departure gate of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Wednesday night, officials said.

Firefighting arrangements were pressed into service to douse the blaze as panic-stricken passengers were moved to a safe place, they said.

No casualty was reported.

The entire area inside the airport was engulfed with thick black smoke after the fire broke out at 3C departure gate at around 9 pm.

Since there was a rush of passengers, airport authorities took no chance and used their firefighters to douse it. At the moment, it is under control and the cooling process is carried out, a police officer said.

Officials said after an initial investigation that a short circuit could be the reason for the fire.

Farmers end protest after assurance from Haryana govt over sunflower MSP

Source: PTI

Farmers protesting over the MSP for sunflower seeds at Pipli in Haryana's Kurukshetra called off their stir on Tuesday night after an assurance from the state government of "appropriate price" for the crop.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait said after fresh talks with the district administration in the evening, the farmers have ended the protest in Kurukshetra's Pipli and the national highway blockade will be lifted.

Kurukshetra Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shantanu Sharma said that farmers have been assured of "appropriate price" for sunflower crop.

The national highway in Pipli had remained blocked for the second day Tuesday over the farmers' demand for MSP for sunflower seeds.

On Monday and during the day on Tuesday, there had not been any headway in talks between the farmers and district administration, but the breakthrough finally came in the evening.

Tikait had earlier asked the state government to accept the demand or send farmers to jail.

The protesting farmers had blocked the National Highway-44 near Pipli, which connects Delhi with Chandigarh, and some other routes since Monday afternoon after holding a mahapanchayat on the issue.

The farmers had been demanding that the state government procure sunflower seeds at an MSP of Rs 6,400 per quintal.

Under the Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana -- price difference payment scheme -- the state government was giving Rs 1,000 per quintal as interim support for sunflower crop sold below MSP.

At AAP Rally, Kejriwal Narrates The Story Of An 'Uneducated King'

Source: PTI

At an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rally at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal narrated what he called a story of "chauthi pass raja".

He said it was a tale from a great country, where a child was born into an impoverished household in a small village and it was predicted by an astrologer that he will go on to become a king.

"The child's mother didn't believe the astrologer since she felt how could this be possible given her poor conditions. But the astrologer assured her that her son's stars showed that he was destined to become a king," Kejriwal said, without taking any name.

The AAP chief said the child did not have any interest in studies and left school after class 4. He started selling tea at a railway station to help his family.

He had a talent of giving speeches that could draw crowds and just as the astrologer predicted, he went on to become the king of the great nation, Kejriwal said, adding that he was known as "chauthi pass raja" across the country.

"He was made to sign documents by officers since he didn't know anything. He also felt ashamed to ask them questions since he thought they would get to know that he is uneducated," Kejriwal said.

The chief minister narrated the story at a rally organised to garner support against the central ordinance on administrative services in the national capital.

Under the king's reign, atrocities were committed and slowly people started raising their voice against him, following which the king said that those speaking against him will be put behind bars, Kejriwal said.

Unemployment and price rise were rampant across the country, he said.

"Gods were watching this from above and then all of them congregated. They held meetings and then went to Lord Shiva to seek his help. Lord Shiva opened his third eye and weird incidents happened in the country. A train accident happened that claimed more than 250 lives and people said it was a bad omen," Kejriwal said.

He said that one day there were heavy rains and a voice from above asked people to raise their voice against the arrogant king and the God was with them.

"The people woke up and threw out that king within a year. After the king's exit, the country started progressing by leaps and bounds. The importance of this story is that the more you narrate it, the more you will be blessed. The more you propagate this story, the society and the nation will progress," Kejriwal said.

He also urged people to vote judiciously.

Is Haaland Football's Next Global Superstar?

With Lionel Messi on his way to Inter Miami and Cristiano Ronaldo already in Saudi Arabia, it's time for football's next global superstar to emerge.

Step forward Erling Haaland, the Norwegian goal machine who has smashed his way through defences in a record-breaking first season with Manchester City.

Standing 6-foot-4 with flowing blond locks, the striker is a daunting sight, with devastating power and pace to go with his precision in front of goal.

Youngsters, including the son of teammate Kevin De Bruyne, are emulating Haaland's hairstyle.

“They all have hair like that," De Bruyne told Belgian broadcaster VTM this week.

Image is one thing, but it is Haaland's prowess on the field that is propelling him to the top of the sport.

Perhaps only Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior can challenge the 22-year-old Haaland to the title of the world's best in the post-Messi and Ronaldo era.

On Saturday, Haaland could fire City to its first Champions League title and a historic treble of trophies after winning the Premier League and FA Cup in a season in which he has exceeded all expectations after signing from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

His goal-scoring talents were already well known. European giants Real Madrid and Manchester United were among his admirers. But his feats at City have defied belief at times and set new standards in England's top flight.

With 36 goals in the Premier League, he set a new benchmark in the division by breaking the record of 34, which was jointly held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer. It had stood for 29 years.

He scored 52 in all competitions, including six hat tricks.

Haaland's five goals against Leipzig in the Champions League matched the record held by Messi and Luiz Adriano for the most in a single game in European soccer's top club competition.

He also became the fastest and youngest player to reach 30 Champions League goals. “His mentality is to score more, more,” City manager Pep Guardiola said.

While he will likely be the player Inter Milan fears most in Saturday's final in Istanbul, Haaland is on something of a scoring drought heading into the game.

Just one goal in his last seven matches represents his worst run for five years, dating back to when he was still establishing himself at Norwegian team Molde.

That recent dry spell, however, has done nothing to shake the sense that he is one of the few players capable of taking over from Messi and Ronaldo as soccer's next global icon. And at 22, he is still developing his game.

“I am still young. I can improve a lot and I am at the perfect place, to work with the best coach and players in the world,” he said, describing Guardiola as a detail freak. “There (are) always things you can get better at.”

Haaland's all-round game has improved after developing more of an understanding with his City teammates. He was outstanding, for instance, in the 4-0 win against Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals, despite not getting on the scoresheet.

Just as Messi and Ronaldo's rivalry helped drive them to even greater heights sharing 12 Ballon d'Or trophies between them Haaland's primary competition for the title of the world's No.1 soccer player is likely to come from Mbappe and Vinicius. But while Haaland may not have their finesse or intricate footwork, his raw power, athleticism and scoring instinct sets him apart.

The greatest players, however, are judged by the trophies they win. Messi's World Cup triumph with Argentina in December has, for many, settled the debate as to who is the greatest out of him and Ronaldo, who has never won the competition.

Haaland is already playing catch-up in terms of trophies in comparison to Mbappe and Vinicius. But he's one game away from adding the Champions League to his Premier League and FA Cup collection.

Mbappe, a World Cup winner with France in 2018, is still to triumph in the Champions League. Brazil star Vinicius won it last year with Madrid.

Given Haaland is unlikely to win major honours with Norway, club titles and personal records are likely to be his chance of establishing himself ahead of Mbappe and Vinicius as the best of his generation.

He feels like the final piece of the puzzle for Guardiola in the coach's pursuit of the Champions League title.

Having won it twice as coach of Barcelona with Messi, Guardiola has repeatedly come up short in the competition since then.

“The Premier League, they won it two times in a row before I came here," Haaland said. “So they know how to win the Premier League. The only thing they miss now is the Champions League, you can think and read between the words, and the lines, I have been coming here for a reason.”

While Mbappe and Vinicius present the potential for a long-term rivalry, Messi likely provides the biggest challenge to Haaland if he is to win the Ballon d'Or this year.

Argentina's World Cup success could land Messi the accolade of the world's best player for a record-extending eighth time. A Champions League trophy for Haaland might change that.

Either way, Haaland looks likely to be a contender for many years to come. Not that filling Messi's shoes will be an easy task.

Even Haaland's remarkable feats this season have fallen short of Messi's most prolific campaign when he scored 73 goals in all competitions for Barcelona in 2011-12, including 50 in the Spanish league.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, scored 61 for Real Madrid in 2014-15. Perhaps that is why Haaland was coy when recently asked if he was now the best goal-scorer in the world.

“I don't want to answer that. I think someone else should answer that,” Haaland told the BBC. “But I scored most goals this season, I think, so that's a good start.”

“They all have hair like that," De Bruyne told Belgian broadcaster VTM this week.

EU warns Zuckerberg to protect kids on Instagram or face 'heavy sanctions'

(Source: IANS)

The European Union (EU) has warned Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to take immediate action on protecting kids on Instagram or face "heavy sanctions".

The warning came after reports emailed that Instagram's recommendation algorithms are allegedly promoting networks of pedophiles who commission and sell child sexual abuse content on the popular image sharing platform.

The Wall Street Journal worked with researchers at Stanford University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst to go undercover and expose such a network of Instagram accounts.

In a tweet, the EU's internal market commissioner, Thierry Breton, said the company's "voluntary code on child protection seems not to work".

"Mark Zuckerberg must now explain and take immediate action. I will discuss with him at Meta's HQ in Menlo Park on June 23," he said in the tweet.

After August 25, under the Digital Services Act (DSA), "Meta has to demonstrate measures to us or face heavy sanctions," he added.

The penalty for non-compliance with the DSA, regarding the failure to curb the spread of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), can scale up to 6 per cent of the social media company's global annual turnover.

According to the WSJ report, Instagram "helps connect and promote a vast network of accounts openly devoted to the commission and purchase of underage-sex content".

The investigators found "128 accounts offering to sell child-sex-abuse material on Twitter, less than a third the number they found on Instagram".

Meta told the Journal that it had failed to act on these reports and that "it was reviewing its internal processes".

In a first, crocodile makes herself pregnant

The first ever known case of a crocodile who made herself pregnant without male intervention has been identified at a zoo in Costa Rica, scientists say.

The crocodile produced a foetus that was 99.9 per cent genetically identical to herself, the researchers said.

The team, including researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the US, noted that the finding is the 'first documentation' of this very rare mode of reproduction in a crocodile species.

Over the past two decades, zoologists have increasingly documented the vertebrate reproductive strategy of facultative parthenogenesis (FP) in which females lay eggs or give birth without mating.

A wide range of organisms including birds, reptiles like lizards and snakes as well as some fishes, have been shown to reproduce in this strange manner, the researchers said.

The study, published recently in the journal Biology Letters, documented the first evidence of FP in the American crocodile, Crocodylus acutus.

The latest research is based on the 2018 observation of a female crocodile held in captivity for 16 years, which laid a clutch of 14 eggs, one of which contained a fully formed, but stillborn, foetus.

The rare reproductive strategy in crocodilian species has particularly intrigued scientists as these organisms lack sex chromosomes and their sex determination is controlled by the temperature in which eggs develop and hatch.

Scientists say the trait might be inherited from an evolutionary ancestor, so dinosaurs might also have been capable of self-reproduction.

"This evidence offers tantalizing insights into the possible reproductive capabilities of extinct archosaurian relatives of crocodilians, notably the Pterosauria and Dinosauria," the authors wrote in the study.

The crocodile who laid the egg was obtained when she was two years old and was kept apart from other crocodiles for her entire life in Parque Reptilania.

Researcher Warren Booth, who works at Virginia Tech in the US, and colleagues analysed the foetus and found that it was over 99.9 per cent genetically identical to its mother, confirming that there was no male intervention in its birth.

"Building on previous studies, the data advances our understanding of the distribution of FP in vertebrates, particularly in that all previous studies relate to species whose sex is genetically determined," the authors added.

Belgium Investigating Whether Arms Shipped To Ukraine Ended Up In Russia Fighting

Source: PTI

Belgium is investigating whether weapons it sent to help Ukraine defend its territory were used in fighting just over the border following a news report that said equipment produced by a Belgian company turned up around Russia's Belgorod region.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo warned on Monday against jumping to any hasty conclusions since shipments over decades and different regions can make arms turn up in unexpected places.

“Defence and information services started a probe to be absolutely sure what happened there,” De Croo told Belgian broadcaster VRT.

The Washington Post published extensive reporting over the weekend saying that arms from some NATO member countries, including the United States, Poland, Czechia and Belgium, had appeared in Belgorod, which borders Ukraine.

The Post's report cast doubt on whether Ukraine had proper controls in place. De Croo said European Union nations supplied Ukraine with weapons on the condition the arms were used only within the invaded country to defend its territory.

“The rule is very strict,” the prime minister said. “Since Russia would likely see the use of the weapons outside Ukraine as Western provocation,” he added.

“While there could be leakage of our weapons to other conflicts,” De Croo said if there was any truth that arms destined to defend Ukraine were used in fighting in Russia, “we would take that extremely seriously.”

The Washington Post said its article involved a cross-border raid by the Legion of Free Russia and the Russian Volunteer Corps militias, which oppose Russian President Vladimir Putin. The latter group purports to include Russians who are fighting on Ukraine's side.

Manipur violence: Members of Kuki community hold protest outside Amit Shah's residence

Source: PTI

People from Manipur's Kuki community held a protest outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah's residence in Delhi on Wednesday against the ongoing violence in the northeastern state, police said.

The protesters were holding placards with messages such as 'Save Kuki Lives' and raising slogans, they said.

Police said four of the protesters were allowed to enter the home minister's residence for a meeting and the rest were shifted to Jantar Mantar.

At least 98 people have lost their lives and 310 more were injured in ethnic violence in Manipur that broke out a month ago. A total of 37,450 people are currently sheltered in 272 relief camps in the state.

Clashes first broke out in Manipur on May 3 after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Elena Rybakina, reigning Wimbledon champion, pulls out of French Open

Source: PTI

Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has pulled out of the French Open before her third-round match because she is sick.

"I just wanted to give 100 per cent, and obviously, I'm far from being 100 per cent," Rybakina said. "If I cannot breathe, there is no chance I can even run and try to compete."

The No. 4-seeded Rybakina was supposed to face 132nd-ranked Sara Sorribes Tormo in the day's opening contest on Court Philippe Chatrier.

They were scheduled to begin playing at 11.45am local time, but instead, at that very moment, Rybakina sat down behind the microphone at a news conference to explain why she was withdrawing from the year's second Grand Slam tournament.

Sounding stuffed up, Rybakina explained that she has been running a fever, didn't sleep well the past two nights and had difficulty breathing during a warm-up session Saturday ahead of her match. She said a doctor told her there is a virus going around here in Paris.

Rybakina, who won each of her first two matches this week in straight sets, was considered among the top contenders for the championship at Roland Garros. She has won her past 10 matches, including a tuneup title on red clay at the Italian Open last month.

She plays a power-built game based in part on one of the best serves on the WTA Tour, which she leads in aces this season.

Last July, Rybakina won her first major trophy, defeating Ons Jabeur in the final at Wimbledon.

Rybakina is a 23-year-old who was born in Moscow and has represented Kazakhstan since 2018, when that country offered her funding to support her tennis career. The switch was a topic of conversation during Wimbledon because the All England Club barred athletes who represent Russia or Belarus from entering the tournament in 2022 due to the war in Ukraine.

The walkover allows the 26-year-old Sorribes Tormo to advance to the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career.

Book On Sidhu Moosewala's Death, Its Investigation To Release On Monday

Source: PTI

A new book gives a detailed account of the death and the subsequent investigation into the murder of Punjabi singer-rapper Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu -- popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala.

Who Killed Moosewala?, scheduled to release on Monday, is written by journalist-author Jupinderjit Singh. Published by Westland Books, it looks at the events of May 29, 2022, the day the Punjabi hip-hop star was shot by six armed assailants while driving to his aunt's house in a village in Punjab.

"While reporting on it (Moosewala's death) I felt that news stories were not going to be enough and I decided to write this book... The weight of responsibility to stick to the facts pressed upon my soul, especially because the investigation is still ongoing. The toll on me is immeasurable, yet through it all, I persisted, driven by a desire to shed light on the murder that reminds us all of the fragility of life," said the author in a statement.

An icon for many, Moosewala had also been a controversial figure. There were allegations that he promoted gun culture and violence, and rumours that he had ties with certain gangs.

With his sudden and violent death, the questions about his life became louder -- as also those around his death. 'Who had killed Moosewala?' was what everyone wanted to know.

In the gripping and fast-paced book, the author closely follows the investigation into Moosewala's death and also offers us glimpses into the man he was behind the mask of celebrity.

Besides the story of the slain singer and those behind his murder, this book is also a rumination on the growing unrest in Punjab.

"Singh's understanding of the case is strong and comprehensive. In this riveting book, backed by meticulous research, Jupinderjit offers up a fascinating portrait of the singer and the Punjab he inhabited," said Sanghamitra Biswas, executive editor at Westland Books.

26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana Files Petition In US Court Against Extradition To India

Source: PTI

Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana has filed a writ of habeas corpus challenging a recent US court order that paved the way for his extradition to India where he is facing trial for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

Last month, the US District Court Central District of California approved the extradition of the 26/11 attack accused Rana to India.

Filing the Writ of habeas corpus through his attorney, Rana, 62, challenged his extradition by the Government of India. Rana's extradition would violate the United States-India extradition treaty in two respects, his attorney argued.

The writ of habeas corpus primarily acts as a writ of inquiry, issued to test the reasons or grounds for restraint and detention.

First, Rana has been tried and acquitted in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois for charges based on the identical conduct for which India seeks to prosecute him.

It argued that extradition is therefore barred under Article 6 (1) of the Treaty, which declares that "Extradition shall not be granted when the person sought has been convicted or acquitted in the Requested State for the offence for which extradition is requested."

Second, the materials submitted by the Indian government -- consisting principally of transcripts and exhibits from Rana's trial in the Northern District of Illinois -- fail to establish probable cause that he committed the offences for which India has charged him.

The Indian government's extradition request thus fails to satisfy Article 9.3(c) of the Treaty, it said adding that the Court should grant the writ of habeas corpus, deny extradition, and order Rana released, the writ says.

On June 10, 2020, India filed a complaint seeking the provisional arrest of Rana with a view towards extradition. The Biden administration had supported and approved the extradition of Rana to India.

"The Court has reviewed and considered all of the documents submitted in support of and in opposition to the Request, and has considered the arguments presented at the hearing," Judge Jacqueline Chooljian, US Magistrate Judge of the US District Court Central District of California, said in a 48-page court order dated May 16.

During court hearings, US Government attorneys argued that Rana was aware that his childhood friend Pakistani-American David Coleman Headley was involved with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and that by assisting Headley and affording him cover for his activities, he was supporting the terrorist organisation and its associates.

Rana knew of Headley's meetings, what was discussed, and the planning of the attacks, including some of the targets. The US government asserted that Rana was part of the conspiracy and there is probable cause that he committed the substantive crime of commission of a terrorist act.

Rana's attorney on the other hand opposed the extradition.

Rana is currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. Rana was arrested in the US on an extradition request by India for his role in these attacks.

India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing his role in the 26/11 attacks carried out by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in 2008. The NIA has said that it is ready to initiate proceedings to bring him to India through diplomatic channels.

A total of 166 people, including six Americans, were killed in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in which 10 Pakistani terrorists laid a more than 60-hour siege, attacking and killing people at iconic and vital locations of Mumbai.

AI Threatens Extinction, Experts Say In New Warning

(Source: AP)

Scientists and tech industry leaders issued a new warning Tuesday about the perils that artificial intelligence poses to humankind.

Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war, said the statement posted online.

Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, and Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist known as the godfather of artificial intelligence, were among the hundreds of leading figures who signed the statement, which was posted on the Center for AI Safety's website.

Worries about artificial intelligence systems outsmarting humans and running wild have intensified with the rise of a new generation of highly capable AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.

More than 1,000 researchers and technologists, including Elon Musk, signed a letter earlier this year calling for a six-month pause on AI development because, they said, it poses profound risks to society and humanity.

Countries around the world are scrambling to come up with regulations for the developing technology, with the European Union blazing the trail with its AI Act expected to be approved later this year.

Venice Police Investigate Bright Green Liquid In Grand Canal

Source: PTI

Police in Venice are investigating the source of a phosphorescent green liquid patch that appeared Sunday in the city's famed Grand Canal.

The governor of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, posted a photo of the green liquid that spread through the water near the arched Rialto Bridge. The patch was reported by residents.

Images on social media show a bright patch of green in the canal along an embankment lined with restaurants.

Zaia said that officials had requested that the police investigate to determine who was responsible.

Environmental authorities were also testing the water. According to reports, police are also investigating whether the green colouring could be a protest by climate activists.

BJP Trying To Replicate Manipur-like Situation In Bengal: Mamata

Source: PTI

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday alleged that the BJP was trying to replicate a Manipur-like situation in her state by planning to orchestrate ethnic riots.

She condemned the attack on state minister Birbaha Hansda's vehicle and claimed that BJP activists, not members of the Kurmi community, were behind the incident that took place on Friday.

The feisty TMC boss iterated there will be a change of guard at the Centre in the next six months, and "people's rights will be restored, and politics of hatred will come to an end".

"The BJP was behind the ethnic violence in Manipur. The saffron party is trying to replicate similar riots between communities in West Bengal. They want to separate the hills from Bengal. They want to create a situation wherein Adivasis will fight Kurmis so that the army can be called in and the military will have shoot-at-sight orders and we won't be able to protect if someone is shot or killed. The BJP is pumping in huge money in the area to foment trouble," she said at a rally in Salboni in Paschim Medinipur district.

Banerjee said those trying to fuel ethnic riots in the state will not be spared.

Earlier this month, ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kukis in Manipur claimed the lives of over 70 people, and 10,000 security forces were deployed even as curfew was imposed and internet services were suspended.

The car of minister Birbaha Hansda, who is also the MLA of Jhargram constituency, was attacked by alleged members of the Kurmi community, leaving several TMC activists injured. The vehicle was part of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's convoy.

"I condemn yesterday's violence in which minister Birbaha Hansda's vehicle was attacked with lathis and stones. She is a proud Adivasi and a state minister. I believe the violence was not a handiwork of the Kurmis. BJP workers disguised as members of the Kurmi community were behind it," she said while addressing TMC's mass outreach campaign 'Trinamool e Nabojowar' (new wave in Trinamool).

She alleged that the BJP was providing money and muscle power to fuel ethnic tension in the area, which was affected by Maoist insurgency a decade back.

Listing out various developmental projects implemented by the state government for the development of tribal-inhabited areas in the state, the CM said her most significant achievement was to bring back peace in Junglemahal region in the western part of the state by putting an end to the Maoist insurgency.

Incidentally, the BJP made deep inroads in Bankura, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts collectively called 'Junglemahal' (the area is home to dense forests) in the 2019 Lok Sabha and 2021 assembly elections.

The Kurmi community, which is classified as OBC in West Bengal, staged protests in several districts, including Dakshin Dinajpur, Purulia, Jhargram and Paschim Medinipur, in April, disrupting railway and highway traffic, to press for the demand for inclusion into the Scheduled Tribe list.

"The Centre has asked me why I haven't instituted a task force for the NRC (National Register of Citizens) exercise in Bengal. I assure you that I will not let that happen," she said.

"People of the country have tolerated a lot in the last nine years of the BJP rule at the Centre. But don't worry, this pain will be over in six months' time. The Union government is bound to change, and people's rights will be restored across the country," she said.

Earlier in the day, Banerjee visited Egra area of Purba Medinipur district to meet family members of those killed and injured in a blast in an illegal fireworks factory there 11 days ago.

Case Against BJP Worker Over Row With Hijab-Clad Woman Doctor

Source: PTI

A BJP worker was booked on Friday for allegedly picking a quarrel with a hijab-clad woman doctor over not wearing a white coat at a primary health centre in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, police said.

Police registered three cases against party functionary Bhuvaneswar Ram, who hails from Thirupoondi in the district, questioned the woman doctor for wearing hijab during duty hours but not donning the white coat and he was heard questioning her credentials in a video of the incident that went viral.

The incident took place inside the Thirupoondi primary health centre in the southern district on May 24 night.

"I doubt if you are really a doctor. Why are you not in uniform, why are you wearing a hijab?" he could be heard asking the doctor in the video.

Nursing staff at the PHC, who came to the rescue of the duty doctor, also put out a video of Ram picking a fight with the doctor.

The BJP worker had taken one Subramanian, who complained of discomfort, to the PHC for treatment but when he saw the night duty doctor clad in hijab, he started quarrelling with her, police said.

A senior police official told PTI that three cases under Indian Penal Code Sections 294 (b) (uttering obscene words in public place), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging duty and 298 (uttering words with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings) were registered against Ram and a search is underway to trace and arrest him.

Sri Lanka Navy Recovers 14 Bodies From Capsized Chinese Fishing Vessel

Source: PTI

The Sri Lanka Navy has recovered 14 bodies from a capsized Chinese fishing vessel after conducting a search and rescue (SAR) operation in the multinational search effort, an official statement said.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), responsible for coordinating and facilitating maritime search and rescue operations in its designated region as well as neighbouring regions conducted the search operations, a Sri Lanka Navy statement said on Tuesday.

The Chinese fishing vessel had 39 people on board, including 17 Chinese, 17 Indonesian and five Philippine mariners. The vessel overturned on May 16 in the central Indian Ocean.

Sri Lankan Navy divers meticulously searched for air pockets within the upturned vessel and recovered 2 bodies from the Captain's cabin and accommodation area.

The bodies were handed over to the Chinese authorities. However, the fate of the remaining crew is not known.

In addition, the Navy divers further located 12 more bodies of the crew from various compartments of the vessel, the statement said.

Several countries, including Australia, India, Indonesia, the Maldives and the Philippines have extended emergency assistance to China.

B'luru Rains: Infosys Techie Drowns After Car Enters Flooded Underpass

Source: PTI

A 22-year-old woman drowned on Sunday after a car she was travelling in with her family got stuck in neck-deep water at KR Circle underpass, just a stone's throw from Vidhana Soudha, the seat of power in Karnataka.

Fire and emergency services personnel saved five others of the family and the driver, with the help of people who had rushed to save those trapped in the flooded underpass in the heart of the city. The victim, as well as the others, were taken to St Martha's Hospital, where doctors declared the woman, identified as Bhanurekha, dead.

Learning about the incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah rushed to the hospital and took stock of the situation. He announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and free treatment for those admitted in the hospital.

"The family from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh had hired a car and come to see Bengaluru. Bhanurekha works in Infosys. Due to the downpour, the barricade at the underpass fell down and the driver took the risk of crossing the underpass, which he should not have," Siddaramaiah told reporters.

Bhanurekha was 22 years old.

When reporters who were covering the incident complained that doctors refused to treat Bhanurekha, who was alive when she was taken to the hospital, Siddaramaiah said he will get it investigated and initiate action.

According to those present at the spot, the car driver tried to zoom through the water, but in the middle of the underpass the car almost got submerged. The occupants of the vehicle came out frantically trying to save themselves.

Due to the downpour and hailstorm, the water level started increasing. As the family started crying for help, people nearby rushed to their rescue.

They threw sarees and ropes to help them keep afloat. Those entrapped tried to climb up but failed. While two of them were dragged out by swimmers of the emergency services personnel, others were brought out using a ladder.

The survivors were rushed to the hospital where they found Bhanurekha dead. Loud mourning ensued at the hospital when the survivors saw the lifeless body of their family member.

An autorickshaw was also trapped at KR Circle and a woman passenger saved her life by climbing on top of the vehicle. The rescuers saved her too.

Meanwhile, several vehicles got trapped at another waterlogged underpass near Majestic, also in the centre of the city. People struggled hard to come out of their vehicles.

Many complained that the place gets flooded whenever there is heavy rainfall in the city and no measures have been taken to prevent it.

Rainwater entered several houses too due to the sudden downpour in the city.

At Mahalakshmi Layout, a prime area in the city, water gushed into houses, damaging furniture, electronic goods and stored food grains.

Many other areas were waterlogged, including the posh areas like Malleswaram and Rajaji Nagar, as well as Srirampuram, certain areas in Kengeri, Mysuru Road and several other low-lying areas.

Trees in various localities came down crashing, damaging homes and vehicles. Traffic was thrown out of gear after trees fell.

"We are getting complaints of waterlogging, and trees crashing from all over Bengaluru," a Bengaluru civic agency official told PTI.

Centre's Ordinance 'Unconstitutional', Attempt To Snatch Power From Delhi Govt: AAP

Source: PTI

The AAP on Saturday said the Centre's ordinance on the transfer of bureaucrats in Delhi is "unconstitutional" and a move to snatch the power given to the Delhi government by the Supreme Court in services matters.

Addressing a press conference, Delhi minister Atishi said the Centre deliberately chose to bring the ordinance at a time when the Supreme Court has closed for summer vacation.

The Centre promulgated an ordinance on Friday to create a National Capital Civil Service Authority for transfer of and disciplinary proceedings against Group-A officers from the DANICS cadre.

This came a week after the Supreme Court handed over the control of services, excluding those related to police, public order and land, in Delhi to the elected government.

Atishi said the Centre's ordinance shows that "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scared of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal" and the power of honest politics.

"They are scared that if he (Kejriwal) gets power, he will do extraordinary work for Delhi. The ordinance is an attempt to snatch the power given to the AAP dispensation by the apex court on May 11," she said.

Even if Delhi's people voted for Kejriwal, this ordinance says he will not run Delhi, the minister said.

The ordinance is "unconstitutional" and will be struck down by the Supreme Court, she said.

"The Centre deliberately chose to bring this ordinance yesterday night. The Supreme Court has closed for vacation for six weeks and this is a deliberate attempt to hamper work," she charged.

Atishi said the Supreme Court gave the powers to the Delhi government after an eight-year-long battle.

"But the Centre could not tolerate this. The ordinance provides for the creation of a National Capital Civil Service Authority with three members -- CM as its chairman and chief secretary and principal home secretary as its members. But it is to be noted that the chief secretary and the principal home secretary will be appointed by the Centre. The authority will take decisions by majority. That means decisions will be taken by the Centre's bureaucrats. If it takes any decision that the Centre doesn't like, then the LG will have the power to reverse the decision," she said.

Sudan Clashes: Army General Formally Fires Rival Paramilitary Leader

Source: PTI

In a symbolic gesture, Sudan's top army general on Friday fired the paramilitary leader (his former ally turned rival) as the deputy of the country's governing body, state media reported.

The dismissal by General Abdel Fattah Burhan of Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the Rapid Support Forces, from the Sovereignty Council comes as the two feuding generals continue to battle for control over this troubled African country.

The month-long conflict has killed at least 705 people, the World Health Organisation said Friday.

The firing, reported by the state SUNA news agency, is unlikely to affect the battlefield where the warring sides appear locked in a stalemate and unwilling to end the hostilities. The paramilitary forces did not immediately comment.

The combat has been most acute in the Sudanese capital and in the western Darfur region.

In South Darfur's regional capital of Nyala, intense fighting between the army and RSF forces flared up on Thursday killing at least 18 civilians, the Darfur Bar Association said, a legal group focusing on human rights.

Last weekend, upward of 280 civilians were killed when RSF and other affiliated militias stormed the city of Geneina, also in the Darfur region, and clashed with armed residents, the Sudan Doctors' Union said.

Last week, the two sides signed a US-Saudi brokered pact vowing to better protect civilians caught in the crossfire. International efforts are underway to try and build a lasting truce.

Burhan appointed Malik Agar, a once prominent leader of the Sudan Revolutionary Front, a rebel movement in Sudan's southern Blue Nile State, to replace Dagalo, SUNA said. The United Nations and rights groups have accused Sudan's warring sides of human rights abuses.

The army has been blamed for bombing residential areas and hospitals, while the RSF was condemned for looting, attacking civilians and turning civilian houses into operational bases.

India In Touch With US Authorities For 'Speedy Extradition' Of Tahawwur Rana

Source: PTI

India is in regular touch with the US authorities for a speedy and early extradition of Tahawwur Rana, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said on Thursday against the backdrop of a US court approving extradition of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks accused.

In a major victory for India's fight in bringing perpetrators of the 26/11 attacks to justice, US Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Chooljian of the US District Court of the central district of California issued a 48-page order on May 16, saying Rana should be extradited to India.

"Insofar as the question of Tahawwur Rana is concerned, we are in very regular touch with the US authorities to ensure that there is speedy and early extradition of Tahawwur Rana. We have all seen the judgement which was given by the local US court there. That conversation of ours with the US side is continuing," Kwatra said.

He was replying to a question at a media briefing on whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take up the issue of Rana's extradition to India if there is a bilateral meeting between him and US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima.

Kwatra did not confirm a bilateral meeting between Modi and Biden.

"The bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G7 summit are still being firmed up. So I am not going to make any assumptions about which meeting will happen and which will not," he said.

Modi will leave for Hiroshima on Friday to attend three separate sessions at the G7 summit.

The ruling on Rana's extradition came just over a month before Modi travels to the US on his first state visit at the invitation of Biden.

The 48-page order dated May 16 was released on Wednesday.

Rana, who is currently in the federal lockup in downtown Los Angeles, can appeal in the Circuit Court.

There is an extradition treaty in place between India and the US. The judge ruled that Rana's extradition to India is fully under the jurisdiction of the treaty.

Accepted Decision In Larger Interest Of Party: Shivakumar

Source: PTI

After suspense over the Karnataka chief minister ended, state Congress chief D.K. Shivakumar, who has been given the post of Deputy CM, said on Thursday that he accepted the decision in the larger interest of the party.

Speaking to the media at the residence of party general secretary K.C. Venugopal, Shivakumar said, "The party high command has taken a decision."

He also said that he has taken the decision in the larger interest of the party.

After holding back to back meetings for three consecutive days, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge ended the suspense over Karnataka Chief Minister by picking Siddaramaiah for the top post with Shivakumar as his deputy.

Both the leaders were vying for the top post.

Siddaramaiah is scheduled to meet Venugopal before leaving for Bengaluru, where the CLP meeting has been called on Thursday evening to make the announcement.

Congress won 135 out of 224 seats in the May 10 polling, followed by the BJP with 66 and JD(S) with 18 seats.

Monsoon Likely To Set In Over Kerala On June 4

A slight delay is expected in the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala and it is likely to arrive by June 4, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

Scientists, however, said the delay is unlikely to impact Kharif sowing and total rainfall over the country.

The southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1, with a standard deviation of about 7 days.

"This year, the southwest monsoon onset over Kerala is likely to be slightly delayed. The monsoon onset over Kerala is likely to be on June 4 with a model error of 4 days," the Met office said in a statement.

Private forecasting agency Skymet Weather, however, said the monsoon is likely to reach Kerala on June 7 with an error margin of three days.

"The onset will be delayed and the advancement slightly sluggish over peninsular India. Hot weather will continue deep into June this year over central and northern parts of the country. This may not augur well for Kharif sowing," it said in a statement.

The monsoon arrived in the southern state on May 29 last year, June 3 in 2021, June 1 in 2020, June 8 in 2019 and May 29 in 2018.

The IMD said its forecasts for the monsoon onset over Kerala have proved to be correct during the last 18 years except in 2015.

The predicted monsoon onset is within the standard deviation of 7 days. It is unlikely to impact Kharif sowing and overall rainfall over the country, IMD chief M Mohapatra told PTI.

"There is no one-to-one relationship between the onset date and the total rainfall over the country during the season. Also, the monsoon arriving early or late in Kerala doesn't mean it will cover other parts of the country accordingly. The monsoon is characterised by large-scale variabilities and global, regional and local features," he said.

M Rajeevan, former secretary of the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, said it is unlikely that the delay is due to Cyclone Mocha. "Had the cyclone developed around May 20-May 25, it would have really affected the monsoon. The cyclone (Mocha) is already over."

"It could be due to insufficient heating over the Indian subcontinent. The progress of the monsoon also depends on other factors such as the phases of Madden-Julian Oscillation and how the El Nino is evolving," Rajeevan added.

The Indian monsoon is driven by the temperature and pressure difference between the Indian landmass and the Indian Ocean.

During summer months, the landmass heats up, creating a low-pressure zone that draws in moist air from the ocean, resulting in rainfall.

Large parts of the country, barring the eastern and northeastern parts, experienced a prolonged wet spell between April 21 and May 7 owing to several back-to-back weather systems.

As a result, most parts of the country experienced significantly lower-than-normal day temperatures during the period.

Roxy Mathew Koll, climate scientist at Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, said a coastal El Nino has already developed in the east Pacific.

"It should develop into a mature state by June-July. This can potentially impact the onset, progression and the overall distribution of monsoon rainfall. The onset can be weak or delayed, and IMD onset forecast aligns with this," he said.

"If the monsoon onset is delayed and the ocean conditions are warm, there could be potential of cyclone formation close to the onset. That can change the course of the monsoon. This happened with cyclones Nisarga and Tauktae. However, forecasts don't indicate a cyclone yet. We'll need to wait and see," he said.

Private forecasting agency Skymet Weather said a powerful cyclone 'FABIEN' is moving over the south Indian Ocean in the equatorial latitudes, abeam southern peninsula.

"The hurricane-strength weather system will take nearly one week to clear the area. This monster storm is restricting the cross-equatorial flow and the build-up of the monsoon stream," it said.

Also, the Arabian Sea continues to host an anticyclone over the central parts in the lower levels of the atmosphere. This acts as a deterrent for the smooth streaming of monsoon flow from the Arabian Sea to the west coast.

"Other pertinent features are also not likely to get aligned with the desired wind pattern over the next 10 days or more. There are no visible signs of establishing typical low-level jets of westerly winds, considered essential for the onset of monsoon," it said.

The IMD had last month said India is expected to get normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon season despite the evolving El Nino conditions.

Skymet Weather had predicted "below-normal" monsoon rains in the country.

India has already seen four consecutive years of 'normal' and 'above-normal' rains during the monsoon season.

Normal rain is critical for India's agricultural landscape, with 52 per cent of the net cultivated area relying on it. It is also crucial for the replenishing of reservoirs critical for drinking water apart from power generation across the country.

Rain-fed agriculture accounts for about 40 per cent of the country's total food production, making it a crucial contributor to India's food security and economic stability.

El Nino, which is the warming of the waters in the Pacific Ocean near South America, is generally associated with the weakening of monsoon winds and dry weather in India.

The El Nino conditions this year follow three consecutive La Nina years. La Nina, which is the opposite of El Nino, typically brings good rainfall during the monsoon season.

The Madden Julian oscillation (MJO) is a large-scale intra-seasonal atmospheric disturbance which originates in tropical Africa and travels eastwards. It is like a pulse or wave that lasts for about 30 to 60 days.

During the active phase of the MJO, the atmosphere becomes more favourable for rainfall. This leads to increased cloud cover, stronger winds, and enhanced convective activity, which results in heavier rainfall over the Indian subcontinent.

During the inactive phase, there is reduced cloud cover, weaker winds, and suppressed convective activity, leading to drier conditions and weaker monsoon rainfall.

Vokkaliga Seers Back Shivakumar's Candidature For Karnataka CM

Source: PTI

Prominent Vokkaliga pontiff of Adi Chunchanagiri Nirmalananda Natha Swamiji on Sunday appealed to the Congress leadership to appoint Karnataka party unit president D K Shivakumar as the next chief minister of the state.

In the wake of Congress getting a thumping majority in the Assembly polls, he also said Shivakumar is the most eligible candidate by all standards to head the state.

The Vokkaliga Sangha, which is the main body of one of the dominant communities of Karnataka, organised a meeting of Vokkaliga pontiffs , where a unanimous decision was taken to request the Congress top brass to appoint Shivakumar, a Vokkaliga who has been steering the state unit, as the next chief minister.

"This programme has been organised to request all the seniors right from Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Siddaramaiah to give Shivakumar an opportunity to run the administration and serve the society," Nirmalananda Natha Swamiji said.

He added that Shivakumar had suffered a lot while discharging his duty. "We all saw tears in his eyes yesterday, which were a mix of joy and pain. The man who toiled so much should get the result," the seer said.

Turkish Presidential Candidate Muharrem Ince Withdraws From race

Source: PTI

A candidate in Turkey's presidential election, Muharrem Ince, announced his withdrawal from the race on Thursday, a move that's likely to benefit President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main challenger.

The candidate who pulled out, Muharrem Ince, is the leader of the centre-left Homeland Party. He was one of four contenders running in Sunday's presidential election. Turkey holds a parliamentary election on the same day.

Ince had faced criticism for potentially ciphering support from the six-party Nation Alliance, which has united behind the candidacy of opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, and thereby forcing the presidential contest into a second round. “I am withdrawing from the race,” Ince told reporters in front of his party's headquarters, following weeks of resisting calls to step down. “I am doing this for my country.”

Erdogan, who has led Turkey as prime minister and president since 2003, is facing the most challenging election of his 20-year rule. Polls have given Kilicdaroglu a slight lead over Erdogan, although neither candidate was expected to garner more than 50 per cent of the vote required to be elected in the first round.

Ince had polled at around 8 per cent of the vote when his candidacy was first announced, but his popularity had since dropped to around 2 per cent, according to opinion surveys. The firebrand politician didn't throw his support behind another candidate, but analysts said his withdrawal was likely to boost Kilicdaroglu's chances.

Nation Alliance members welcomed Ince's decision to step down, expressing hope for a first-round victory Sunday. Kilicdaroglu called on Ince to join the opposition coalition.

“Let's leave old resentments, old grievances behind,” Kilicdaroglu wrote on Twitter.

Erdogan meanwhile said he regretted Ince's decision. “Of course, it is impossible to understand why he withdrew. Honestly, I was saddened," Erdogan said during an election rally in Ankara. “Now, we will continue (this race) with the remaining candidates. What matters is the decision of my people.”

Ince said the Homeland Party, which he formed in 2021, would still participate in the parliamentary election, and he called for votes for the party from each household.

The 58-year-old former physics teacher ran against Erdogan in the 2018 presidential election on the ticket of Kilicdaroglu's CHP party. He had garnered around 30 per cent of the vote but later broke away from the party.

“They will have no excuses if they lose the election,” Ince said, in an apparent reference to Kilicdaroglu.

Remaining in the presidential race with Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu is 55-year-old former academician Sinan Ogan, who has the backing of an anti-migrant party.

DRDO Official Held By Maha ATS Is 'RSS Volunteer', Says Congress

The Congress on Wednesday alleged that DRDO official Pradeep Kurulkar, arrested on charges of providing confidential information to a Pakistani agent, was an "active RSS volunteer".

The DRDO official was arrested last week by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). The Congress' attack came a day after a special court in Pune extended till May 15 the police custody of Kurulkar after observing that the charges against him were serious and custodial interrogation of the accused for a further period is unavoidable for a thorough probe.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters in Delhi, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said the arrest of Kurulkar is a "very serious matter" and alleged that it exposes the "anti-national face" of the RSS.

"Pradeep Kurulkar, an active RSS volunteer leader and DRDO's Director of R&D (Engineering), has been arrested by the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) for spying on behalf of Pakistan. The case.... exposes the lie and charade of the RSS being a so-called nationalistic organisation," he claimed.

The Congress spokesperson said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah should answer as to what is the relationship between Kurulkar and the RSS as the matter pertains to national security.

There was no immediate reaction from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Khera also showed a video during the press conference of Kurulkar addressing RSS events with top Sangh functionaries in attendance.

"Kurulkar's association with the RSS goes back generations, as he revealed in an interview with a YouTube channel last year. His grandfather was an RSS volunteer who worked as a mathematician, and his father carried on his work for the Sangh," Khera claimed.

The scientist was allegedly in touch with an agent of a Pakistan Intelligence Operative through WhatsApp and video calls, an ATS official has said, adding it was a case of honeytrap.

Renowned Wrestling Coach Mahavir Phogat Threatens To Return Medals

Source: PTI

Standing in support of the protesting wrestlers, Dronacharya award-winning coach Mahavir Singh Phogat on Friday threatened to return his medals if justice is not delivered, demanding the arrest of WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The wrestlers, including Olympic medallist duo of Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia and World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat, have been sitting on a protest in the national capital since April 23, demanding the arrest of the Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP MP Singh for alleged sexual harassment of seven wrestlers, including a minor.

"I will return my medals if justice is not delivered in the case," Mahavir Phogat said. "The kind of allegations he faces, action should be taken against him and he should be arrested," Mahavir Phogat, who had joined BJP over three years ago, added.

When asked if had talked to the government or raised the matter at the party level, he said, "No, there has been no talk so far."

The protesting wrestlers had also threatened to return their medals and awards, including the Padma Shri, to the government after they were allegedly mistreated by the Delhi Police on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, several Khaps in Haryana have also come out in support of the protesting athletes. On Thursday, many Khaps held protests including in Hisar, Bhiwani, Jind and Rohtak, expressing solidarity with the wrestlers and demanding that they should be given justice.

Notably, Mahavir Phogat is the father of wrestlers Babita and Geeta Phogat, who was detained by the police along with her husband on Thursday when she tried to meet the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar. He is also the uncle of Vinesh, who has been at the forefront of the protest.

Israeli Forces Kill 3 Wanted Palestinians In West Bank

Source: AP

Israeli troops on Thursday killed three Palestinian militants wanted in connection with a shooting attack that killed a British-Israeli woman and two of her daughters, the Israeli military said, the latest bloodshed in a relentless wave of violence.

In a rare daytime incursion launched as residents were starting their day, the military said forces entered the heart of the flashpoint city of Nablus and raided an apartment where the men were located. Troops and the suspects exchanged fire and the three men were killed.

The military said the men were behind an attack last month on a car near a Jewish West Bank settlement that killed the British-Israeli mother and two of her daughters.

It said two of the men were members of the Hamas militant group. It described the third man killed as a senior operative who had assisted the other suspects.

In a statement after the raid, Hamas claimed all three men, identified as Hassan Qatnani, Moaz al-Masri and Ibrahim Jabr, as members and claimed responsibility for the April attack.

Israeli shells ripped through the roof of the gunmen's safe house in the heart of Nablus' Old City, leaving nothing but twisted metal, cement blocks and torn mattresses still stained with blood scattered over the rubble. A couple of hours after the army withdrew, young men collected scores of ejected bullet shell casings from the narrow alleys.

The violence in Nablus comes at a particularly sensitive time in the region, days after a prominent Palestinian prisoner who was staging a lengthy hunger strike over his detention died in Israeli custody. His death set off a volley of rockets from militants in Gaza and Israeli airstrikes in the coastal enclave that killed one man.

The deadly attack last month on the Israeli car shocked Israelis because in an instant it reduced the Dee family from seven members to four. Hundreds of people packed the funerals and the family's father, Leo, has been a recurring figure in Israeli media, saying he bears no hatred toward the killers of his family and calling for national unity amid a deep societal rift.

Israeli officials said the raid showed attackers would be hunted down eventually.

"Our message to those who harmed us, and to those who are trying to harm us, it'll take a day, a week or a month, be certain that we will make you pay," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.

Israel has been staging near-nightly arrest raids into West Bank villages, towns and cities for more than a year in an operation prompted by a wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis last year.

Israel says the raids are meant to dismantle militant networks and thwart future attacks. The Palestinians see the attacks as further entrenchment of Israel's 56-year, open-ended occupation of lands they seek for a future independent state.

The raids have been met by a surge in Palestinian attacks.

Some 250 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the raids were launched. Israel says most have been militants, but stone-throwing youth and people not involved in the confrontations have also been killed.

During that same time, nearly 50 people have been killed in Palestinian attacks against Israelis.

Canada Puts 'Goldy Brar' In 'Top 25 Wanted Criminals' List

The Canadian government, on Tuesday, named Satinder Singh Brar, nicknamed Goldy Brar, the alleged mastermind in the killing of famous singer-politician Sidhu Moosewala, among the country's top 25 wanted criminals.

The Punjab-origin affiliate of Lawrence Bishnoi's gang is wanted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after India obtained an Interpol Red Notice for Brar in June 2022, the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi said in a statement.

Brar's life-sized cutout among all 25 fugitives has been displayed at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square, according to the Bolo (Be On the Lookout) Programme' list.

The 29-year-old is accused of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and illegal arms trafficking in India.

However, there is no reward for Goldy Brar, who features on the 15th number in the list.

Brar, who reached Canada on a student visa in 2017, allegedly claimed responsibility for the murder of Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, who was shot dead in Punjab's Mansa district on May 29, 2022.

Brar is accused of committing these crimes while being in Canada and is currently under investigation, but is not charged with any criminal offences in Canada, the statement said.

Goldy Brar, who belongs to Punjab's Muktsar, has been on the run since then.

Interpol notices are international requests for cooperation or alerts allowing police in member countries to share critical crime-related information. In the case of Red Notices, the persons concerned are wanted by national jurisdictions for prosecution or to serve a sentence based on an arrest warrant or court decision.

In Canada, an Interpol Red Notice does not provide police the authority to arrest a person. An individual may only be arrested if reasonable probable grounds exist that the individual has committed a crime in Canada, or if a Canadian arrest warrant has been issued.

The offences Brar allegedly committed in India are very serious in nature and merit the interest of the police in Canada, the statement said, adding that "Brar is believed to be in Canada and represents a risk to public safety".

The Punjab Police have blamed Goldy Brar and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi for the killing of Moosewala.

Bishnoi, who continues to remain in jail after his arrest in 2015, has been operating his terror-crime syndicate from prisons in different states, along with Canada-based Goldy Brar, who is also an accused in the killing of 'Dera Sacha Sauda' follower Pradeep Kumar at Faridkot (Punjab) in November 2022.

Goldy Brar has been named in the 1,850-page police charge-sheet filed in the Mansa court on August 26 last year.

Jailed gangsters Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria have also been named in the chargesheet alongside a dozen others.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Anti-Gangster Task Force chief Pramod Ban is probing the killing of Moosewala.

Ban has said Bishnoi, the main conspirator, confessed that the execution planning was hatched in August 2021 to avenge the murder of Akali youth leader Middukhera.

Kejriwal Residence Renovation: Delhi LG Asks Officials To Secure Records Of Expenditure

Source: PTI

Amid a row over crores of rupees spent on renovating Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's official residence, LG VK Saxena has ordered officials to secure the records of expenditure and sought a report on the matter within 15 days.

The BJP has been attacking Kejriwal and AAP, claiming Rs 45 crore was spent on the renovation of the chief minister's residence -- 6, Flagstaff Road -- during 2020-22. The AAP has hit back, saying the BJP was trying to divert attention from real issues by raising this matter.

A Raj Niwas order issued on April 27 cited reports on alleged "gross irregularities" in the renovation of the residence by the PWD.

"Lt Governor, while taking note of these media reports and keeping in view the sensitivity of the issue, has desired that all relevant records in this matter be immediately secured and taken into protective custody. Subsequently, after the records are examined, a factual report in the matter be submitted within 15 days for perusal of the lieutenant governor," said the order issued to the chief secretary of the Delhi government.

AAP leaders, including Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha, have defended Kejriwal citing expenses on the residences of the prime minister and the chief ministers of BJP-ruled states.

Documents provided by sources showed that a total of Rs 44.78 crore against a sanctioned amount of Rs 43.70 crore was spent on addition/alternation of the Delhi chief minister's official residence.

The amount was spent in six trenches between September 2020 to June 2022, the documents showed. According to the documents, the total expenditure included Rs 11.30 crore on interior decoration, Rs 6.02 crore on stone and  marble flooring, Rs 1 crore on interior consultancy, Rs 2.58 crore on electrical fittings and appliances, Rs 2.85 crore on fire fighting system, Rs 1.41 crore on wardrobe and accessories fitting, and Rs 1.1 crore on kitchen appliances.

A separate amount of Rs 8.11 crore out of the sanctioned amount of Rs 9.99 crore was spent on the camp office of the chief minister at his official residence, it showed.

IAF Rescues 121 People From Sudan In Daring Operation

Source: PTI

In a daring operation, a C-130J heavy-lift aircraft of the Indian Air Force rescued 121 people from a small airstrip at Wadi Sayyidna which is about 40 km north of the violence-hit Sudanese capital city of Khartoum, officials said on Friday.

The rescue operation was carried out on the intervening night of April 27 and 28.

Those rescued in the operation included a pregnant woman and those who had no means to reach Port Sudan, the key transit point from where India is rescuing its citizens using military aircraft and naval ships, the IAF officials said.

The airstrip in question had a degraded surface with no navigational aid or fuel, and most critically no landing lights which are required to guide an aircraft landing at night, said one of the officials.

The officials said the aircrew used their electro-optical and infrared sensors to ensure that the runway was free of any obstruction and there were no inimical forces in the vicinity.

“Having made sure of the same, the aircrew carried out a tactical approach using night vision goggles on a practically dark night,” said the official.

“Upon landing, the aircraft engines were kept running while eight IAF Garud Commandos secured the passengers and their luggage into the aircraft. As with the landing, the take off from the unlit runway was also carried out using night vision goggles,” he said.

“This approximately two-and-a-half hour operation between Wadi Sayyidna and Jeddah will go down in the annals of IAF history for its sheer audacity and flawless execution — akin to that carried out in Kabul,” the IAF official said.

The Indian Air Force had carried out similar operations to evacuate Indians from Kabul after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021.

India launched ‘Operation Kaveri‘ earlier this week to bring back the stranded Indians from Sudan.

Sudan has been witnessing fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group that has reportedly left around 400 people dead.

Condoms, Contraceptive Pills, Pregnancy Test Kits Recovered From Maoist Hideout After Encounter

Source: PTI

Police seized condoms, contraceptive pills and pregnancy test kits from a Maoist hideout following an exchange of fire with red rebels on Odisha-Chhattisgarh border, a senior officer said on Thursday.

Giving details of the exchange of fire, Nabarangpur, Superintendent of Police, S Sushree said the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) of Odisha Police conducted an anti-Maoist operation in Raighar area of Nabarangpur district bordering Chhattisgarh. An encounter took place on Tuesday night.

The SP said on Wednesday at around 9.30 AM, the operational teams of police came across a group of about 20 to 25 armed CPI (Maoist) cadres including Murli (Central Committee Member), Kartik, Guddu, Akash, Nandal and others at east of village Saibin Kachhar in Udanti sanctuary.

"On seeing the operational team, the armed Maoists started firing at the police party. In defence, police returned the fire. The exchange of fire continued for about half an hour. Taking advantage of the terrain and dense forest, the Maoists managed to escape from the camp,” said the SP.

The SP said huge quantities of articles were seized from a Maoist camp. She said that condoms, contraceptive pills and pregnancy test kits were found in the camp. Two guns have also been seized. Besides Maoist leaflets, banners, detonators and food items were also found in the camp, she said.

The SP said that there was sufficient evidence that women were being sexually exploited in Maoist camps.

Combing operations have been intensified in the inter-state border areas of the district. Senior officers are monitoring the developments, she said.

Meanwhile, Odisha Police has issued a high alert in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur, bordering Chhattisgarh.

Same-Sex Marriage: Court Can't Rewrite Fundamental Architecture Of Law, Says Centre

Source: PTI

The court can neither rewrite nor alter provisions and the very fundamental architecture of a law as conceived at the time of its framing even by reading something into it, the Centre told the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The Centre's submission came when the court was hearing pleas seeking legal sanction for same-sex marriage. It asserted that the legislature alone can deal with the issues raised in the pleas.

In his written submissions, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, said the impact of the socio-legal recognition of same-sex relationships as "marriage" on the society as a whole has to be kept in mind before any decision is taken in the matter.

"The matter cannot be just viewed as an individualistic constitutional pursuit, and the larger interests of human society and Indian society need to be appreciated in this regard," he said.

Mehta said it is only the legislature which can, in its wisdom after gathering all details, taking several factors into consideration and as per the emerging legislative policy, conceive of a comprehensive piece of legislation for all LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit, asexual, and ally) persons.

A five-judge Constitution bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices S K Kaul, S R Bhat, Hima Kohli and P S Narasimha continued hearing arguments in the matter for the fifth day on Wednesday.

Mehta said in his written submissions that the matter represents a profound anthropological and social question concerning prayers made by the petitioners seeking creation of a new socio-legal status and institution of "marriage" for the class of persons for which no such legal status exists under the statutory mechanism in place.

He said the heart of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, is to provide a legislative framework for inter-faith marriages but doubtlessly between heterosexual couples.

"The court will have to examine the entire architecture of the Act rather than to examine few words like 'husband', 'wife', etc. The prayer to declare the said Act unconstitutional merely because it recognizes only heterosexual marriages, therefore, must fail," he said.

"The court can neither rewrite the provisions nor can it alter the very fundamental architecture of an Act as conceived by the legislature at the time of framing of the Act even by reading something which was consciously omitted at the time of enactment," Mehta said.

In his written submissions, he said the socio-legal recognition to "same-sex relationships" in particular and all shades of LGBTQIA+ in general has a very nascent history which started in 2001 in the Netherlands.

The Solicitor General said this movement for socio-legal recognition to same-sex relationships needs to put into perspective that it has roughly been 20 years since this experiment began in a particular part of the world in contradistinction to the unbroken line of continuity of opposite-sex marriage in human civilisation since time immemorial.

"The tall claims of 'scientific evidence', especially with regard to the impact of socio-legal recognition to non-heterosexual relationships as 'marriage', considering the nascent history of the same, require far more evidence, material and time before any sweeping claims can be made or accepted, he said.

Mehta said the protection and preservation of fundamental rights of LGBTQIA+ community is not in dispute and in fact, this is fully protected by Parliament itself by making the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.

"The question really is whether to confer socio-legal status of 'marriage' or any other name to such a relationship. This is essentially a question based upon the legislative policy," he said.

"The court can adjudicate an enactment and protect fundamental rights but will not have the jurisdiction to create a new socio-legal institution between two or more human beings clearly not contemplated by any legislation," Mehta said.

The Solicitor General also said in his written submissions that any exercise of either reading down the provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954 and/or reading into some words in various provisions of the law or any other Act not intended to be used by the legislature will have an unintended effect on the rights of heterosexual couples under the legislation.

"The judicial process of interpreting any legislation, even for the purpose of making such legislation constitution compliant, cannot result into a situation where the same enactment applies to one class of citizens differently and to another class of citizens differently. Such internal classification can be made only by the competent legislature and not by the process of judicial interpretation," he said.

Mehta said in the countries where same-sex marriages are recognised are so recognised by law by their respective legislatures and such legislations have, simultaneously, amended other incidental provisions in various other Acts.

"Such an exercise can be conducted only by the legislature," he said, adding the focus of the apex court has been invited by the petitioners broadly to two classes only -- gays and lesbians.

"The term LGBTQIA+ refers to much more than these two categories of individuals. It will be impermissible for the court to rewrite the Special Marriage Act, 1954 keeping only these two categories in mind," he said, adding that as per the information available in public domain, there are total 72 categories of genders falling within LGBTQIA+ community.

During his arguments, which would continue on Thursday, the solicitor general said the moment any right which was pre-existing without recognition of law is recognised, it is also regulated and there is no absolute right to marry even today between heterosexual couples.

He said a male has to be 21-year-old and a female has to be 18 years, meaning thereby the law prescribes when to marry.

"The autonomy goes," he said, adding, "Bigamy is prohibited. So law prescribes how many times you can marry simultaneously, till your wife or husband is alive. There are prohibitions regarding degrees of prohibited relationships meaning thereby law regulates whom not to marry."

Referring to the privacy part, Mehta argued even the codified law among heterosexuals protects the privacy of a man and a woman inside the bedroom but there are certain provisions where there is an intrusion to privacy rights also.

Giving an example where impotence is one of the grounds for divorce, he said it is a very personal and private thing for a couple but if it is a case of divorce, one will have to come out and prove it.

"So your privacy is breached," he said.

Mehta referred to four fundamental principles on which the court's exercise would be constrained and said the court will not change the character of a law which has to be examined from its entire architecture and also the history which preceded enactment of the Special Marriage Act.
